Anläßlich einer Brainstorming-Sitzung der ÖNGENE (Österreichische Nationalvereinigung für Genreserven) zur Lage der Gefährdeten Nutztierrassen und der Frage einer weiteren Förderung ab 2013 haben wir den Bestand des Huzulen-Pferdes in der EU näherungsweise erhoben. Einbezogen sind nur die zuchtfähigen Tiere, also Zuchtstuten, Jungstuten und Zuchthengste - nicht also Junghengste und Wallachen -, soweit sie über 5 Generationen rein und in Zuchtbüchern registriert sind. (Für Rumänien sind außer den 7 Hauptbeschälern in der Lucina die derzeit 42 Landbeschäler und eine entsprechende Abschätzung der aus der Lucina kommenden Landstuten einbezogen.) Diese Angaben konnten an die im April 2011 auf der HIF Generalversammlung von den einzelnen Ländern mitgeteilten Bestandszahlen angepaßt werden.

On the occasion of a brainstorming session of the Austrian Organisation of Genetic Resources regarding the situation of endangered livestock and the question of an ongoing support from 2013 onwards we have approximately ascertained the livestock of the Hucul-horse within the EU. We have born in mind animals for breed, that is brood mares, young mares and stallions - therefore no young stallions and no geldings - as far as they are registered in stud books. (For Rumania besides the 7 stallions in the Lucina we have included the present 42 stallions in the country as well as an estimate of the mares in the country  originating in the Lucina.)  These figures are adopted now to the figures given by the individual countries at the General Assembly of HIF in April 2011.

Wir regen an, daß alle Verantwortlichen in den Huzulen-züchtenden Ländern allfällige Korrekturen der Bestände an Club Hucul zur Revision dieser Statistiken mitteilen. Die derzeit erhobenen Daten im Detail:

We propose, that the responsible people within the Hucul breeding countries report possible corrections with respect to the Hucul stocks to Club Hucul in order to revise the statistics. The presently available data:

Insgesamt sind damit etwa 2.600 Zuchtstuten in Zuchtbüchern eingetragen, mit Fohlen, Jungtieren und Wallachen sind ca. 8.300 Huzulen registriert. Der derzeitige Bestand an Fohlen und Jungtieren entspricht einer mittleren Produktionsrate von 2 Fohlen pro Zuchtstute innerhalb 5 Jahren. Setzt sich dieser Trend fort (etwa über die Förderbedingungen), wird es im Jahr 2015 fast 5.000 Zuchtstuten bzw. 16.000 Huzulenpferde geben - näherungsweise eine Verdopplung in 5 Jahren (Verdopplung alle 5 Jahre!) oder ein Wachstum von 14%/a.

In total there are 2.600 Hucul brood mares (inclusive those of ÖZP and LZV-OÖ, which are not mentioned in HIF) and 8.300 registered Huculs including foals, 1 and 2 years old and geldings. The present stock corresponds to an average breeding rate of 2 foals per brood mare within 5 years. If this trend continues (i.e. by breeding incentives) we will have nearly 5.000 brood mares respective roughly 16.000 Hucul horses in the year 2015 - approximately a doubling within (each) 5 years or a growthrate of 14%/a.

Ermöglichen die Förderbedingungen 1 Fohlen pro Zuchtstute innerhalb 5 Jahren als mittlere Produktionsrate, so werden im Jahr 2015 statt 5.000 nur 3.000 Zuchtstuten registriert sein (bei einer Wachstumsrate von etwa 3%/a oder einer Verdopplung nur etwa alle 20 Jahre).

If the conditions of subsidy allow 1 foal per mare within 5 years the evolution of Hucul population sigmificantly slows down to 3%/year, doupling within 20 years and with 3.000 brood mares in 2015 instead of 5.000.

Bei diesen Populationsgrößen erhebt sich die Frage nach dem Verwendungszweck. Die landwirtschaftliche Nutzung ist in Polen, der Slowakei und in Tschechien fast völlig der reinen Freizeitnutzung gewichen; und auch in Rumänien nimmt die landwirtschaftliche Nutzung rapide ab (100 Landesbeschäler im Jahr 2002, 42 Landesbeschäler 2010) - und eine Freizeitnutzung existiert (noch?) nicht. Die Freizeitnutzung hat insbesondere bei wirtschaftlich schwierigen Zeiten ihre Grenzen. Und ohne Förderungen, die auf den alten Typ achtet (und die artgerechte Aufzucht und Haltungsbedingungen mit einbezieht), läuft die Rasse Huzulen-Pferd Gefahr, sich von ihren typischen Eigenschaften der Trittfestigkeit (kurzbeinig), Robustheit (Brustumfang ...), Umgänglichkeit (Herdenverhalten ...) und Vielseitigkeit (wofür der Huzulen-Pfad einen typischen Bewerb darstellt) weg zu entwickeln zu einem "modernen" Huzulen, der aber nur ein zweitrangiges Sport-Pony bzw. eben ein schlechteres Reit-Pony-Äquivalent - zumindest bei Spring- und Dressur Bewerben - sein würde/sein könnte (HISO - Hucul Internationale Sportorganisation - ???). Im Orientierungsritt, bei Huzulenpfad-Bewerben (kleine Vielseitigkeit), Zugbewerben, als charakterstarker Partner im therapeutischen Reiten sowie beim Tracking Reiten in schwierigem Gelände - also überall dort, wo es auf Gelassenheit, Mut, Leistungswilligkeit und Leistungsfähigkeit ankommt - wird der "Huzule vom alten Typ" in seiner Klasse vermutlich konkurrenzlos  bleiben.  Dazu wird es darauf ankommen, daß die im URSPRUNGSZUCHTBUCH des PZHK formulierten Bedingungen nicht aufgeweicht und vor Allem durchgesetzt werden. 

Regarding these magnitudes of population the question arises: for what? The agricultural use has changed to recreational use nearly completely in Polen, Slowakia and Tschechia.; in Romania too, the agricultural use is declining rapidly (100 country stallion in 2002, 42 country stallions 2010) - and a recreation use is not (yet?) existing. The reacreation use has its boundaries, especially in economically difficult times. And without subsidies which cares for the old type (including breeding appropriate to the species and animal husbandry) the Hucul horse may edge away from his typical attributes like safe footstep (short legs), robustness (perimeter of breast), companionable qualities (behavior in herds/groups) and military (typically the "Hucul Path") to a "modern" hucul, but then featuring a second-order sport-pony - at least in jumping and dressage (HISO - Hucul International Sport Organisation - ???). The old-type Hucul will be unrivalled in his class wherever one cares for response, courage, motivation and fitness, that is orienteering, Hucul-Path (small military), coach competitions, as of strong character intherapeutic horseback-riding or horsebackpacking in difficult off-road. It will be important thereto, that the conditions/attributes/qualities formulated in the stud book (of origin for the Hucul horse, administered by the PZHK) will not be weakened and will be  pushed through above all.

Es ist an dieser Stelle festzuhalten, daß es im Wesentlichen Polen und der PZHK waren, die beim Huzulen-Pferd den Übergang von einem landwirtschaftlichen Nutztier zu einem Freizeit-Pferd gemeistert haben und es aus dem Bereich einer hochgefährdeten Rasse herausgeführt haben. Gleichzeitig haben Polen und der PZHK den Charakter eines "Gebrauchspferdes" bewahrt und mit dem Huzulenpfad und den "Gebrauchspferde"-Championaten - verpflichtend als Leistungsprüfung für Zuchtbucheintragungen von Zuchthengsten und von Zuchtstuten - für eine typerhaltende Selektion gesorgt (sowohl im Verhalten, bei den Leistungen als auch vom Exterieur her). Ein Auflassen der Förderung könnte zu einem unerwarteten Einbruch in der Population führen, eine bedachtsame Fortsetzung der Förderung bei strengen Auflagen an Leistung und Typ und das Nachdenken über einen zeitgerechten Gebrauch/Verwendung  (Gebrauchspferd/Nutztier) kann das Überleben des Huzulen-Pferdes sichern. 

At this point we will emphasize, that mainly Polen and the PZHK have managed the transition from the Hucul-horse beeing an agricultural working animal to the Hucul-horse beeing used for recreation; and that mainly Polen and the PZHK have lead the Hucul-horse out of the sphere of highly endangered species. At the same time Polen and the PZHK have cared for that the Hucul-horse keeps qualified for practical use: they have introduced obligatory performance tests for stallions as well as brood mares using huculpath (small military) and thus  supporting selection which conserves the specific hucul-type properties (as well in conduct, in performance and in exterieur). This selection is supported further by steady championats, regional and nationwide. To stop subsidies could lead to a sudden setback of the Hucul-population, an advised continuation of support together with strong conditions on performance and type as well as considerations to modern use can save the Hucul-horse.
